The effect of water surface roughness on the measurement of radiated ship noise

Assessment of effect of Surface roughness on measured noise levels associated with shipping. Roughness reduces amplitude of coherent reflection and therefore impact of Lloyd’s mirror effect at higher frequencies. Two cases considered: deep water with translationally symmetric surface, and shallow water case with 2D rough sea surface. Both cases simulated using equivalent source method-based model and 3D Helmholt-Kirchhoff approximation. Results indicate that incoherent scattering component almost completely compensates for coherent component loss. Sensitivity of measurement varies with frequency.
