The ocean is becoming an increasingly noisy environment. With a rise in com-mercial shipping, resource extraction activities, and military-related activities, the underwater ocean environment is a virtual cacophony of noise. While somesources of underwater noise such as wind, waves, and the mating and communication calls of marine mammals are natural contributors to underwater noise levels, humans also contribute a significant level of noise to the marine environment. Anthropogenic sources of noise in the marine environment pose uncertain and poorly characterized threats to marine mammals and other forms of marine life. An issue of growing concern, the impact of ocean noise on marine mammals, is receiving greater national and international attention from the scientific, legal, and environmental communities, as well as more intense scrutiny from the general public
