The effects of vessel slowdowns on foraging habitat of the southern resident killer whales

Analysis of participation in ECHO program, a collaborative programme to introduce voluntary slowdowns for commercial shipping traffic. A 61% participation rate resulted in 22% reduction in ‘lost foraging time’. Increased leniency in target speeds resulted in increased participation to 87% and a reduction of lost foraging time on the order of 15%. Results suggest effectiveness as potential mitigation measure.
