Shipping noise in the Azores: a threat to the Faial-Pico cetacean community?
Soares, C., Duarte, R.J., Silve, M.A, Romagosa, M. and Jesus, S.M.
Azores archipelago is an important habitat for migratory cetaceans. Assessment of shipping noise in channel between Pico-Faial carried out to attempt to separate background abiotic, manmade noise, and therefor, noise due to a single shipping source. Shipping noise prediction tool using 10-min resolution AIS coverage used in conjunction with Bathymetric, descriptors and surface wind noise used. Significant variability shown between islands, mainly observed in the straits and the south, both associated with ferries/fishing activity.
